What Does An Elderly Person Vomiting Dark Liquid Indicate?

Hello, my grandmother is under fasting since 8pm last night. She will get her lab test done in a few hours. What concerns me is she vomitted a tall glass of brown liquid, and it smells fishy. This is the second time, last time was a couple of nights ago. But it was less than a cup. She was constipated and was given a supository and was able to empty her bowels earlier today.

Hello and welcome to HCM
I'm Dr Taimoor and will be addressing your health concerns.
Dark brown colour vomitus often called coffee ground is because of blood in vomitus, medical term for which is hematemesis.
This may be due to a bleeding ulcer (mostly because of longterm use of pain killers, stress etc), chronic liver disease (due to Hepatitis B,C infection or long term use of alcohol).
To ascertain the cause we usually go for Blood tests and Endoscopy plus an abdominal ultrasound.
Hope this will be of some help. If you have any query please fell free to ask.
Thanks

Regards
Dr taimoor
