What Does A Spot On The Lung Increasing In Size Indicate?

Yes my husband has had a lung biopsy done for a spot on his lung, for which we were told it was not cancer. his lungs are in bad shape and the lung collapsed. Now six weeks later he had another ct scan to check the spot, and it has grown, and the lymp nodes are enlarged also. they want to do a biopsy now down the windpipe I do not know what it is called, and we are concerned of his lung collapsing again.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Very likely your husband is going to do a bronchoscopy which consists of inserting a tube with a camera from the mouth to the airways. With this examination material for biopsy can be taken if the spot is close to the airways (bronchus).

Bronchoscopy alone very rarely causes lung collapse but doing needle biopsy might increase this risk. On the other hand if the doctor has decided to do the procedure it means the benefit of doing the examination (determining the diagnosis and proper treatment for the spot) outweigh the risks of developing lung collapse so it is important to follow the doctor's instructions. The doctor will also have the proper measures to treat in case a lung collapse develops.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
