What Do You Mean By PVNS?

Hi, I have just had a lump removed from my thumb. The histology came back which showed it was a PVNS.

The doctor told me that this may well recur in the same area, however I have been reading on the internet that this is some kind of joint disease and that if it does recur it can be anywhere on the body. My doctor never mentioned joint disease.

Could you clarify exactly what PVNS is please.

Many thanks.

Sandra

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi there.
PVNS or pigmented vilonodular synovitis is inflammation of the synovium basically.
Synoviums are coverings of the joints in the body.
Since synoviums are there in every joint hence this disease can occur almost anywhere although the most common joint involved is knee joint and it usually involves very few joints at a time.
But unfortunately this disease is very notorious for recurrence.
Joint involvement is secondary to the lond standing synovitis and hence arthritis, although common in long standing synovitis, is not the primary cause.
Good luck.
