Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am taking metformin at mealtimes. Currently, we are on holiday and I am finding it difficult to stick to main usual meal and schedules. I were wondering now, is there a minimun amount of carbs that I need to consume before taking metformin (we are at some stages just snacking for lunch) or should I rather skip one dosage?
Metformin is an oral hypoglycemic agent that acts as an insulin sensitizer. It enables the body to improve the efficacy of the insulin you have in your body. Therefore, hypoglycemia is not a common side effect of metformin (unlike insulin therapy).
In my opinion, maintain your diabetic diet as you normally do or as close to it as you can. Try and have your regular meals. But in general, there is no minimum dosage. Do not skip your metformin doses.
Additionally, keep a few candies on you in the event that you feel the onset of hypoglycemia. Symptoms include increased sweating, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
