Hello,

My name is Richa Saxena and I am a Certified Diabetes Educator. I will be glad to help you.

Are you having tingling sensation in the hands and feet? Are there any other symptoms like numbness, burning sensation or sharp shooting pain also? Your symptom suggests a complication of diabetes called peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage. It begins slowly with the above symptoms and gradually progresses upwards in legs and arms. When detected on time, you can control its progression with appropriate medications and a good diabetes control. Neuropathy results due to poorly controlled long-standing diabetes. Hence you should focus on managing diabetes effectively. Get your HbA1c test done as it tells you about your sugar control over a period of 3 months. An occasional lab test for fasting, PP or Random does not give a clear picture of your blood sugar control for a substantial period of time. Also monitor your blood sugar regularly at home using a glucometer device. It will help you to modify your diet and activity levels. Hope this information will serve as a guide in managing diabetes in a better way.

You can always ask me for more guidance about diabetes management.

Diabetologist Dr. Niranjan G's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Tingling sensation in diabetics usually suggest neuropathic damage.
2. Your sugar level is not under control and has contributed extensively to neural damage. If not controlled now also, can lead onto further damage causing burning pain, numbness etc.
3. Multiple organ damage can ensue due to uncontrolled sugar levels. Along with sugar control, to improve neuropathic injury, you can take Vit B12, Vit E and alpha lipoic acid capsules.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
