What Could Cause A Painful Hole In The Bikini Line With Pus In It?

My daughter, age 12, has quite deep and very painful hole on her bikini line where she, after 4 weeks of an ever increasing infection from what we think was an ingrown hair, plucked up the courage to make a pin-prick hole and squeezed out lots of puss and fluid and maybe the ingrown aswell - shes not sure if she got it all. The hole is is about 5 cm in diameter and painful. We cleaned it with antiseptic swab and the doctor a week ago prescibed antibiotics for the infection. Do we just let it close up by itself? Will it? Do we need to go back to the doctor? How do we stop it getting infected as it is now an open wound?

Hello and welcome,

This is indeed a slightly difficult situation. However there is treatment.

As of now, it is important to get all the pus drained. As long as there is pus it will not heal. So give her some pain killers that the doctor must have prescribed. Clean it with antiseptic and squeeze it to remove all pus. You may need to do it for a day or two until no more pus comes out from it.
Apply neosporin powder at night and mupirocin ointment during the day to control infection. Cover it with a sterile dressing during the day, she can apply it under her bikini border. At night leave it open after application of neosporin for at least 2-3 hours or longer if possible. This will help to get it drier fast.
Absolute hygiene and avoiding to contaminate it with fecal matter from the anus is very important. Also it must not come in contact with water as it will delay healing. So clean the perineum with medicated wipes from top to bottom twice a day and also change undergarments twice a day and wash them with hot water.

Continue the antibiotics and pain killers and it will heal. May take a few days to become dry.

I understand that it is at a sensitive area and difficult to manage but still if you take all the precautions it will get cured.

Hope this satisfies your query.
