What Could Be The Reason For 8 Year Old Having Swollen Nodule On Left Jawline?

Hi, so I took my 8-year daughter to the doctor last Wednesday for the following: a swollen nodule that can be felt along her left-jawline (like a small ball). The pediatrician indicated that it could be caused by salivary gland or lymph but did not give definite answer. She said to have her checked for a cavity, which I have schedule an annual visit with her dentist this Thursday. She does not have fever and according to her, she is not in pain. Thoughts?

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.
We will try our best to answer your query.

You mentioned that your daughter has had a swollen nodule alongher left jawline for the last 5-6 days or so. No fever or pain.

Like your doctor mentioned that it may be a swollen lymph node. Swelling of lymph nodes could be reactive secondary to inflammation or infection in the areas from which the node gets its drainage. In her case, it could be from the mouth- like infection in the gums/teeth/throat/tonsils.

In the above scenario, your doctor would recommend antibiotics for about 7-10 days and most often the lymph node swelling reduces in size and then goes away.

I would recommend that you visit her dentist to have her mouth evaluated for any gum disease or tooth infection. Also, if her swelling is increasing or has not decreased in size for more that 1 week, then see her pediatrician again for another evaluation and he may suggest some blood tests based on his examination and a round of antibiotics to see if that helps.

Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
