What Could A Large Bruise And Red Marks On The Side Of Spine Indicate?

My husband recently noticed a fairly large bruise on my spine/lower back and a red mark on each side of the bruise. I have not fallen or had any injury to my back although I do suffer from chronic back pain, along with neck and shoulder pain. What is causing this bruise and the two red marks on each side of my spine?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Bruise or red marks without injury are commonly indicative of muscle strain, bone fracture, hematoma (blood seeping from broken capillaries), ageing, underlying undetected health condition, deficiency of vitamin K and vitamin C, side effects of certain medicines or deficient blood-clotting elements, etc.

You are suggested to visit ER, get clinically examined, assessed and detected for the factor (pathology) causing you such discomforts. Your treating doctor will tell you to get blood and urine tests done. You will have to get MRI/CT done. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected.

In the meantime, apply ointment Thrombophob in the area affected to reduce any blood clots. Take acetaminophen, one SOS to reduce inflammation and pain.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
