Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
I do not know if your wife has seen a doctor so far this
pregnancy, but for the amount of
weight loss she is experiencing and the fact that she cannot keep food down she may need to be hospitalized. Furthermore, if she has a history of an ulcer, acid in her stomach may be a factor as well, and she really needs to see a GI specialist. There are stronger anti-
nausea medications that can be given through an IV in the hospital as well as tests that can evaluate her properly.
So I suggest you take your wife to the emergency room. There they can at least give her IV nutrients and fluid and stronger medicine to help the nausea. She may also need treatment for stomach acid, which also can be given via IV if she vomits up pills.
I hope I was able to answer your question today and please help your wife get an evaluation in the hospital as she has been suffering for a long time and has lost a lot of weight. In the meantime, she should stick with just bland liquids, like milk, apple juice, and anything made from ginger (tea is good and helps with nausea. Only plain, dry things like bread and crackers should be tried for food in small amounts.
I wish her good luck for the pregnancy and I hope she feel better soon.
Sincerely, Dr. Brown
