What Causes Weight Gain And Depression When Diagnosed With Thyroiditis?

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis in 2014. I am trying to find answers why my meds are not working, diet info, etc. I have had 2 endocrinologists who just do routine blood work with little or no support. I have been reading, researching, and basically, pulling my hair out to no avail. I have gained weight (partly due to smoking cessation and lung surgery in 2016). I have no energy, depressed and totally frustrated. Any direction or advice is welcome.

Hello,

Hashimoto thyroiditis initially will cause hyperthyroidism, but later on, it causes permanent hypothyroidism. The decrease in thyroid hormones may cause excessive weight gain, poor concentration, lack of sleep, depression etcetera. My suggestion is please go, for a complete thyroid profile, and if they are abnormal, you have to take thyroid supplementation. For dosage, you have to consult a doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Siddartha
