What Causes Water Leak During Periods?

For a couple days during my period, I have a watery leak. It s heavy enough to soak through my underwear and pants. I am changing my tampon pretty regularly (super absorbancy around 2 1/2-3 hours). Is this normal? I feel this is a pretty recent condition.

Hi,

According to your description I am assuming that you are having heavy menstrual flow during your periods. The possible causes of heavy menstrual flow are:
- Reproductive hormonal imbalance.
- Local conditions like fibroids, adenomyosis, etc.
- General conditions like thyroid abnormalities, blood sugar fluctuations etc.

If the heavy bleeding persists or recurs in next menstrual cycles, better to get evaluated. By clinical examination and investigations like hemoglobin levels, blood sugar levels, thyroid profile and ultrasound, the possible cause of the problem can be identified and treatment can be taken accordingly. Antifibrinolytic drugs like Tranexamic acid helps in controlling the bleeding and giving symptomatic relief.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
