What Causes Vomiting, Sometimes Cold Sweats And Severe Unbearable Pain During Periods?

Hello. I am a 33yr old African American female. I used to have irregular periods ever since I was about 12; bleed for 2wks, or go 2 months without a period. About 5yrs ago I was diagnosed with ovarian cysts. The doctor got rid of what she could but left the one on my left ovary, stating the position of it would require surgery for removal. I was on birth control pills for a over a year but those things made me nauseous EVERYTIME. BUT, for about the past two years running, my periods have been right on time every 25 to 30 dys and ALWAYS last only 5 dys; without taking any medication. I can just about predict the start and the end. However, my periods are usually extremely painful around day 2. On a scale of 1-5 (5 being horrible) usually 4.8. I usually vomit, sometimes have a cold sweat, and am doubled over in pain. This last about 24-36 hrs. I have to miss work for about three of those five days. After the 5 days is up I'm gold until the next period. I don't spot between periods at all. I do have wet panties as if I've been sweating down there, not heavy, just enough to wear a pantyliner. Also, to my shame, I am about 85lbs overweight. But I did lose about 1-2lbs and my last period was not so bad. On a scale of 1-5 (5 being horrible) it was about 3.5. I know the pain I experience during my period is not normal, but I am wondering if I have developed some kind of condition, bigger ovarian cysts, endometriosis, pcos, endometrial cancer or something worse. OR are my periods normal and I just have REALLY bad cramps and need to keep losing weight?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. All women experience periods differently. While some women experience light or no discomfort, others experience symptoms like you have such as severe pain along with vomiting that can make you miss work and debilitate you. This much severity of symptoms should not be ignored or considered normal.

Have you been to your gynecologist for follow up after being diagnosed with PCOS the first time and after treatment was over? There is a possibility that you may have developed other cysts or the cyst that was left inside may have grown making the menstruation difficult.

I would suggest you to visit your gynecologist for the follow up sonogram to check on the status of the cyst. Meanwhile, if you get periods, you can take an analgesic that suits you and can find relief in pain. Rest during those days and drink lots of fluids.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
