Hello,
Vaginal discharge is a natural phenomenon and varies throughout the menstrual cycle depending on the hormones. If the discharge has altered color, smell and/or is associated with itching, burning sensation and/or symptoms of urinary tract infection, investigation is needed. She needs a vaginal and cervical swab along with pap smear and urinalysis. Treatment should continue even after symptoms abate and for a period of 3-6 months as prophylaxis. Partner treatment also should be done simultaneously. Hope this helps.

Hallow Dear,

It is not clear from your history whether she gets discharge only after sex or it starts after sex and continues for some period.

After sexual intercourse, some mount of semen always flows out of vagina. It is normal and does not need any attention.

If the discharge is flowing for some period, then it is definitely some infection - bacterial, trichomonal or fungal. Taking a swab of this discharge for laboratory testing will reveal what sort of infection is this and accordingly the treatment may be started. Bacterial infection causes mucoid discharge and needs antibiotics, Trichomonal discharge is frothy greenish white causing itching and is treated by metronidazole while fungal discharge is white flaky like curds and is treated with antifungal vaginal ovules.

Since the infection seems to be sexually transmitted, both of you will have to undergo the treatment simultaneously. Till that, please observe sexual abstinence.

During menstruation, most of the discharge gets washed off with the menstrual discharge and hence it may become unnoticeable for some period and will increase after some days. Therefore get the discharge examined when it is showing.

I hope this helps you.
