What Causes Throat Discomfort After A Cataract Surgery?

Thursday I had cataract surgery. I have reactions to epinephrine. Tightness of throat and talk like a munchkin. When I have surgery, they have to use a different anesthetic. Well. The pupil would not stay dilated so she use something with Epinephrine. Also she had to use a lot of numbing drugs because I just wasn t numbing up . I noticed I was having difficult breathing so I concentrated on relaxing. I don t know if it was all the numbing drugs or the drug with the epinephrine in it because I don t know the timing of when that drug was administered. I have an appointment coming up Friday to talk with the doctor. The appointment day after surgery I didn t remember to tell her what I experienced and we thought I didn t have any reaction and she wants to put it on my record that I don t have a reaction to epinephrine only if it is accidently put into a vein as was probably done when Ihad a reaction after 2 dentist appointments years ago. I had gone to another specialist and his drug didn t have epinephrine in it. No reaction to the Novocain. Concerned Susie

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

yes epinephrine is used at times in form of a solution inside the eye to dilate the pupil during cataracts surgery and very very small amount can diffuse into the blood but pupillary dilation is a must for cataract surgery and we cannot do it without that. maybe you developed discomfort due to that or may be because there is a sterile drape covering the eye during surgery many patients do feel a little discomfort because of it.

Hope I have answered your query.
