What Causes Thick Vaginal Discharge With Occasional Burning Sensation?

Hi there. I am a relatively healthy 19 year old female. I have been on erythromycin (twice daily 250mg) for a couple of months to clear up a skin rash. Now I have started to develop symptoms of what I believe to be a vaginal yeast infection but I am not sure. I have the thick discharge with occasional burning (not when urinating) and I have had some urinary incontinence and an increased urge to urinate. I had strong smelling urine one time when I first started the erythromycin. However, none of my symptoms are consistent on a day to day basis. I can go a couple of days without any symptoms at all. What I am wondering is, is the erythromycin keeping a bacterial infection from getting worse/treating it temporarily? Or is it possible to have both a bacterial infection and a yeast infection? Or is it just a yeast infection? I have never been sexually active so I dont have any std s. Should I see a doctor or try over the counter medicines for a yeast infection first to see if it clears up?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from thick vaginal discharge and burning sensation. You have history of taking erythromycin (250mg), for a couple of months to clear up skin rash. Use of erythromycin for prolonged or repeated periods may cause oral thrush or yeast infection. Stop taking the said medicine if you notice white patches in your mouth or a change in vaginal discharge. You are suggested to take care of your genital hygiene, wear soft cotton clothes. Take bath regularly and avoid the use of harsh chemical soap or lotion.

Apply Monistat vaginal cream in your vagina to get rid of yeast infection. You can also take a course of antifungal medicine for a week. Stay well hydrated to flush out toxic products naturally. Avoid using public toilets and washrooms. To stay on the safer side, you are suggested to get clinically examined and get Urinalysis (R/E and C/S) done to detect E.coli infection. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
