What Causes The Fluid Around The Baby's Head And Neck During Pregnancy?

Hello,

I am 26yrs old, I am 5ft 3, and i weight about 150lbs.

I have had two other children both born at around 33 weeks. I am currently pregnant with my third child, Im about 14 weeks and I had a dr. appointment about a week ago where I had a ultrasound done and they told me they found fluid around the top of my baby's neck and a little around the head. I dont really understand what that means but she sent me to see a genetic dr who told me it could be a number of things. Down syndrome, chromosomes disease, cystic fibrous, and some other things she named. Is it possible that this was a misunderstanding and the fluid will go away?

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine 's  Response
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Fluid around the foetus head and neck can be increased nuchal translucency or increased nuchal thickness. It is usually present in fetus with:
1. Chromosomal anomalies, especially Down syndrome
2. Congenital heart disease
3. Other congenital syndromes and anomalies.
You need to get a detailed anomaly ultrasound from a fetal medicine specialist and get amniocentesis to confirm the fetal karyotype.
Further management has to be done accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
