What Causes Swollen Esophagus?

Hi I am a 60 year old female that for the last few day have had trouble swallowing things like bread. It would hurt my esophagus only in a small area on the left side. I have also had pain in my left upper chest and back. Today my espophagus feels 'swollen'. It even is sore when I put my neck down . What could be going on?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Difficulty in swallowing could be due to inflammatory condition of esophagus. It is mainly happening due to acid reflux disease called GERD. This condition can be managed tentatively with drug called PPI (Proton pump inhibitor) numbers of molecules available.

But, the most effective is Omeprazole 40 mg and it is to be taken along with Domperidone 10 mg once in day till 6 weeks. If it fails to respond then condition may demand the testing like barium swallow test, endoscopy and other.

You need to be careful about your diet, avoid spicy food, heavy meal particularly at evening time avoid alcohol, smoking, and coffee prior to bed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akhtarhusain
