What Causes Swelling In The Ankles And Itchy Skin While On Tolterodine?

Hi, I was taking tolterodine slow release 4mg capsule but the doctor took me off because of the NHS cutbacks and put me onto fesoterodine, again 4mg slow release. Whereas I got on with the tolterodine, I m wondering whether these symptoms are side effects of the fesoterodine: Swollen ankles Itchy skin Increase in eczema especially on the face Chronic indigestion which is something I never suffer with! Getting up more times during the night to spend a penny Going from not being desperate to very desperate in abnormally short time - a minute! I hav asked the doctor to put me back on tolterodine (2 x 2mg). I ve been told these two Medes are for the same problem and the easiest way to understand is to say these are siblings/cousins. Is it possible for me to take the one without any significant side effects and the other one to effect me so much? I would really appreciate your views.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your doctor is right that the two drugs belong to the same group and have similar effects but as their chemical structure is different so they can have different allergic responses. In the literature, allergic reactions have been more common (about 1 per cent patients ) with fesoterodine and are very uncommon with tolterodine. So in spite of the fact that they belong to the same group, the latter can cause a more allergic reaction. So your symptoms may be for this reason. You can discuss with your doctor to change the drug.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
