What Causes Swelling In Knees, Low Appetite And Constipation?

male, 72 yrs, has lost a lot of weight, has trouble eating (gags when eating, can only eat soft foods, doesn t like thick protein drinks, etc.), suffers from constipation, spends a lot of time in the bathroom, mentioned loss of bladder control. his religion keeps him from seeking medical care & I don t know how serious this is & what he may be suffering from or how to help. also loss of muscle mass, therefore, strength. his legs below the knees have swelled a lot--feet look stretched tightly across, toes like sausages--all very frightening.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM!
I am sorry to hear about the problem.

Her knee swelling might most probably be due to Arthritis, that is inflammation of the knee joint. It is a common problem that occurs in old age.

Low appetite and constipation are again often common symptoms that occur during old age.

She might need medications for her swollen knees, specially if associated with pain. For low appetite, try and find out what she likes and is ready to eat and give her that frequently. She might be given multi vitamin tonics. If constipation is too bothersome, a pro-motility drug amy be given to clear her bowel.

Hope this information helps.
Wishing her good health.
With warm regards,
Dr. Sridhar
