I sprained my right ankle on Saturday early evening and it wasn t painful, I didn t feel or hear a pop however it is very swollen and has started to bruise, I can feel my toes but not the top arch of my foot, that is tight and numb, should I be concerned about blood clots or nerve damage?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.

Generally, if at all any fracture or internal bleeding has occurred in the joint, you will feel paon alongwith swelling, externally appearing bruises and difficulty on moving the joint.

Since, you have all the signs except pain, I would suspect some serious injury if you have any condition which causes decreased pain sensation eg. diabetes, hypothyroidism, etc.

Even if you donot have the above conditions, still I would suggest you get an X ray of the ankle joint as these signs are unlikely if there is no internal injury.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
