Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
There are many causes of under active thyroid but the most common is autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimoto disease. To confirm it you need to check AntiTPO and antiTg antibodies.
Some medications can cause it too.
Please inform if you have been taking any.
The treatment is hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine and you should check the TSH level 6 weeks after starting treatment with the dose recommend by your treating physician.
It is true, in most of the cases the treatment is long life.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
