What Causes Stomach Pain, vomiting And Diarrhea?

I have been sick now for about 3 weeks. It started out with diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Currently I am feeling much better but have trouble eating solid foods. I been to the Doctor 3 times and have been told I have a serious case of the stomach flu. Could this be something else, I never heard of the stomach flu lasting this long?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
I understand your concern.
-You seem to have sever gastroenteritis. IT can be either viral, bacterial, parasitic, through contaminated water or intolerance to certain food gropups ( gluten, lactose)
- Mostly, management of dehydration ,rest, with drugs to control pain/vomiting suffice to control mild cases.
- In a long standing case like yours, I would suggest certain investigations & pin point causative factor.
Stool examination for routine/microscopic, culture & sensitivity, specific tests to find food allergies are usually done. This is followed by specific medicines/ dietary restrictions -which relieve .
I would advise for a gastroenterologist for proper guidance.
Thanks

General & Family Physician Dr. Michelle Gibson James's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Stomach flu or gastroenteritis , as you stated, does not normally last this long though illness can vary from one person to the next.

It is possible that you have residual inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. You may want to consider the use of probiotics to see if it would restore normal bacterial flora.

This can be in the form of yogurts with probiotics or they can be used on their own from your local pharmacy.

If there is no further improvement then you should visit your doctor for an assessment.

I hope this helps
