What Causes Stabbing Pain Behind The Left Ear?

I am 66 yrs old. I have a very sharp, stabbing-like pain behind my left ear, like in the mastoid area. It's not constant, comes and goes. I've taken advil, some benedryl (thought if there was fluid build up, the Benedryl would help dry it up. I'm using a cool pack on it now. Nothing has helped yet.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of stabbing pain behind the left ear. It seems to me that the lump is Mastoiditis . Sometimes you develop an ear infection and don’t get treatment, you may develop a more serious infection of the ear called mastoiditis. This infection develops in the bony protrusion behind the ear, which is called the mastoid. Apply warm compresses 2-3 times a day. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI or blood test to confirm the diagnosis and rule out conditions like lipoma and lymphadenopathy. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics orally or administer it intravenously.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
