Hello ive been in birth control for three years now. Las month I was spotting the whole week before my period. I seen only seen the blood when I wiped and it was a light pink. My period was normal. This month the same thing is occurring except im full on bleeding but its still in small amounts. I should be getting my period next week. I take my pill at the same time every day I never miss a pill. Also I do smoke weed about twice a week. Can you explain why this is happening?

hi sir/madam,
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.

Some women experience spotting between periods. This is particularly common during the first three months of taking a contraceptive pill, during which your body adjusts to the hormones. You may also notice this side effect after more than three months of taking the pill. Spotting is not necessarily medically problematic but if the bleeding bothers you, you may want to try a different contraceptive pill.

Breakthrough bleeding is more common with minipills, which only contain the hormone progesterone. Minipills are taken every day without a break and they contain a lower hormone dose. Some women do not have any bleeding while using a minipill but in some cases, the minipill can cause spotting throughout the month. If you experience this side effect you can ask your GP to recommend an alternative pill for you to try.

Consult your doctor for further treatment.
