What Causes Sores On Tongue And Gums With History Of Breast Cancer?

My friend has terrible sores on her tongue and gums. She has been to an Eye Ear Nose and Throat doctor several times and they have given her steriods orally, cortizone shots in her tongue and tried a few other drugs. Do you have any idea what might cause these sores. She has had breast cancer about 3 years ago and a single masectomy. They have not taken any tissue from her tongue to check it which I suggested. She is miserable!!

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain it seems that your friend is suffering from Recurrent Canker sores or Recurrent Apthous Ulcers leading to painful ulcers in mouth and in her case it seems that she is in an immunocompromised state as well as there can be nutritional deficiencies leading to painful Canker sores..

As she is treated with steroids which is an ultimate treatment in case when Canker sores does not subside with other treatments..

You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated as persistent ulcers which does not heal at all can be an indication of Malignant ulcers and biopsy may be needed but in case if they improve with medication then they are canker sores only..

For canker sores the treating doctor will advise your friend should do warm saline gargles..
Gargle with 1:1 solution of Benadryl and Milk of Magnesia will help..
A Steroid course has to be taken under supervision of the physician..
Apply a Steroid based ointment like Kenalog in Orabase 0.1% over sores to reduce inflammation..
Apply a numbing gel like Oragel for numbing the ulcers especially during eating to reduce discomfort..
Take a multivitamin tablet daily for 1 month..
Avoid hot , spicy , sour and acidic foods..
Sucking ice pops can help in reducing inflammation..

Hope this information helps..

Regards
