What Causes Sore Throat And Difficulty In Swallowing?

Hi, I am a 53 year old male and have been smoking 15-20 cigerettes for 2-3 years. Some symptoms that I have are a swollen throat, lots of mucus when swallowing, sore throat at times. I am concerned that it may be cancer of the throat or mouth or what other conditions could it be?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . sore throat and difficult swallowing can be caused by bacteria or virus. In your case it seems to be a bacterial infection. In sore throat tonsils in neck get swollen and cause tonsillitis . The symptoms can also occur due to smoking , also smoking will lead to low immunity which make one susceptible for infection.I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination and to rule out other condition like acid reflux and lichen planus .Doctor may order blood test and throat swab test to confirm diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin, cephalexin or penicillin) course for around 10 days and vitamin C supplement for quick recovery.Dotor may also prescribe antacid and H2 blocker in case of acidic reflux disease.

For now what you can do is gargling and rinsing with warm saline water ,drink plenty of fluids to keep your self hydrate and take ibuprofen(if not allergic ) or acetaminophen for pain and inflammation. Avoid smoking.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
