What Causes Skin Tags On The Outline Of The Lips Of A Child?

I have a 6yo girl with history of 1skin tag removal by an OMFS physician in 2010, she received slight sedation (gas) & the skin tag was surgically removed. The physician stated that it had embedded itself into the vermillion border. He also mentioned that it was common for children in daycare to present with these "pappillomas ". Well, now it is 2yrs later & since May of this year, we noticed several (4) more growing around her lips, just on the outside Linnie of her lips are 3 & we noticed the one growing back over her scar from where she had the last one removed. She is healthy, active, on no medications... Only OC vitamins. Her diet is well maintained, she is not overweight for her age either. She complains at times that 1 hurts... The one growing over scar tissue from the last removal. Why does she continue to grow these? Will they grow in larger clusters? Should we encourage our physician to test her for HPV? My husband & I are medical professionals (ER-R.N. & Paramedic), so medical terminology use / explanations would be great. We have an appt. on July 31st with a new plastic surgeon since we've moved.

Pediatrician, Pulmonology 's  Response

Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic. By what you quote I think, we are dealing here with viral warts. It could be due to HPV too as you have rightly suspected. Coming to your questions -
1. She might continue to grow them as removal is usually cosmetic and doesn't address the basic infection.
2. They might come in clusters
3. Kindly check for HPV and also coxsackie virus.
Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.
