What Causes Sickness, Runny Nose And Eyes Watering?

Our three year old has been very sick,(in and out of ER twice this weekend) he is on an antibiotic and we have tried everything to get his nose to stop running and eyes to stop watering...he has never had this before, wondering if it is allergic reaction to the amoxicillin.

Hi,

This is unlikely from Amoxicillin allergy (it will be associated with itchy rash). Rather, this is part of the initial illness. If no fever and the discharge is not thick yellow / foul smelling, we need not worry. It may take 1-2 weeks for these symptoms (mucosal irritation) to settle. Try taking an antihistamine like Levocetirizine for 5 days (if not given already). Also, avoid dust / smoke exposure, and keep away from cold.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
