Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have shortness of breath and often chest pain/pressure. I do not wheeze but often am having to breathe very heavily even after a short walk. Last time we went to the doctors my blood pressure was 128/92 and my heart rate was faster than it should be. They said to keep a look out for palpitations or feeling of my heart skipping beats but never gave any details. Also as a child I had abnormal heart murmurs???
Normally a heart murmur is heard when listening to the chest with the stethoscope, if none were detected when you were seen by your doctor, it would mean that these are not likely present at this time.
Palpitations means that you feel as though your heart is beating quickly or abnormally (that is you check your pulse and it feels irregular). There are certain situations where a fast heart beat is expected with activity, infection, stressful situation, pain or side effect of some medications. If you are having shortness of breath, you should have an EKG and possibly an echo to assess heart function. Treatment would depend on the findings.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
