What Causes Sharp Pain Under The Sternum When Suffering From Thyroid Problem?
My daughter had issues with her thyroid after childbirth. While she is on medicine for it, she had formed gallstones and had her gallbladder removed in September. Now she is complaining of a sharp paid again under her sternum. Is there anything that you can determine from this? Is there a possibility that there are still gallstones in the duct?

Infectious Diseases Specialist, Dr. Praveen G's Response
Hello, Welcome to HCM After going through your history, since your daughter's gallbladder has been removed, possibility of formation of gall stones again is very rare. The most cause for pain behind sternum is - GERD (gastrooesophageal reflux disease) commonly called gastritis. It may also be due to musculoskeletal injury like sprains of muscles, bones, tendons, and cartilage that forms the chest wall. Chest pains associated with musculoskeletal injury are typically sharp and confined to a specific area of the chest. So,no need to worry.I would suggest you to take H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors for treatment of gastritis. Thank you.
