What Causes Severe Pain In The Feet And Toes?

I m 62 yo male in good health. Last few days, my middle toe on my left foot has an intermittent burning pain that lasts for maybe 5 seconds, then goes away and comes every 60 seconds to 30 mins between. The skin where the toenail goes in to the toe seems slightly red but not sore to the touch at all. No trauma to the toe or foot, seems like a nerve pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Burning pain is commonly associated with neuropathy (abnormal function of the nerves).

It can be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes.

Some of the causes are: (1) diabetes
(2)low levels of vitamin b12 or folate
(3)abnormal levels of vitamin b6
(4)thyroid disease
(5)side effect of medication
(6)liver or kidney disease
(7)ms or stroke- uncommon
(8)infection such as shingles

I hope this helps
