What Causes Severe Itching On The Hand Along With Discoloration?

Out of nowhere I developed an itch on my hand. I rubbed it a couple of times before actually looking at it. I had a large blue bruise which later turned purple. I look as if I ve trapped my hand in a door. It was also swollen. This happened this time yesterday. It s still slightly swollen and a purple colour now. Any ideas?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The discoloration of purple color indicates changes in the underlying hematoma via disintegration of the collected blood, which can be possible without evident trauma. Primary care with:
- Local application of ice
- Analgesic medications as ibuprofen or diclofenac which also has anti- inflammatory properties
- Elevation of concerned upper limb with arm sling support
- Antihistamine for itch control
- Discuss need of antibiotic to resolve it faster and avoid secondary bacterial infection

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
