Is Body Itching A Symptom Of Venous Insufficiency?

I had severe itching of my legs are arms for past one month. I tried so many different itching cream, increase my VitaminD but nothing helped. Yesterday I tried my compression socks and 95 percent of my itching went away. I am diagnosed with Venus Insufficiency and radio frequency ablation was done. What causes severe itching?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Venous insufficiency and varicose vein can cause itching and skin changes over the leg, especially over the ankle region.

Due to the pooling of blood in the lower legs, there will be trapping of blood cells and release of inflammatory mediators and it will subsequently cause severe itching.

RFA (radiofrequency ablation of the incompetent veins will be the treatment of choice and in your case treatment went perfectly fine. Continue compression stockings for few more days for the best results.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
