What Causes Severe Itching On The Face?

Hello sir, my face itches in every 15-20 min. Throughout the day and it causes a great discomfort. I control myself alot to scratch my itches. None of my family members have this problem. It all started when I used a Garnier acnofight facewash for my pimples. It caused lot of itchiness on my face though I discontinued using that. Now, I am using dove soap and after that I am applying a glenmark elovera moustrizer on my face because my face becomes dry as soon as I apply any soap to my face, and since this is a winter season, it s my compulsion to apply moustrizer. But, then also my face is itching. And I have been suffering from acne as well. Now, all I want to get rid of itching as it s disturbing my day to day activities and it s causing a huge discomfort and I am controlling myself alot to scratch my itches and I am keeping a hanky with me to scratch my itches. What should I do....?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You can consider using an oral antihistamine and mild topical steroid to help reduce the itching. Oral antihistamines are over the counter medicines, such as zyrtec, allegra, claritine, benadryl. The topical steroid cream that you can use over the counter is hydrocortisone.

You can use the combination of the antihistamine and steroid cream for 5 days to help. After the itching has resolved, you can address the acne. You can consider using a cream such as epiduo or clindoxyl for the acne. Epiduo has a retinoid and benzoyl peroxide and clindoxyl has an antibiotic plus benzoyl peroxide.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
