What Causes Severe Cough While Suffering From Vitamin D Defciency?

I am on a low dose of high blood pressure med, my last blood test showed a low vitamin d level. I quit smoking a year & a half ago. I stopped coughing within a few weeks after quitting smoking. Then a few months later I started an allergy type cough. I went in the blood pressure med after I quit smoking. Now a couple of times a day and a few times at night I have a coughing fit, need to blow my nose and eyes water. Can this be an allergy even tho it is overall seasons and different parts of the country..

Hello,

With history, I do not think there is any correlation between cough and vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to muscle and bone weakness but not the cough.

The cough you are facing is due to the weakness of the pulmonary system.

Since you were smoking, we can expect some weakness of the pulmonary system and needs to undergo pulmonary rehabilitation like - medication, nebulizer/steam, breathing exercises etc.

This is a standard way of improving pulmonary symptoms. Taking the Blood pressure, I will advise you to do regular physical exercises like - walking, low-intensity aerobics etc.

Cardiac rehabilitation has a positive support from the research. The recent articles states that having 20-30 minutes of daily exercises can help reduce the blood pressure.

Modifying the diet will also play some additional role. The latest research even adds taking a power nap in afternoon reduces the blood pressure to 5 mmHg.

So overall this whole plan sounds good as recent trends are more to help blood pressure under control.

Also, vitamin D deficiency is due to a lack of exposure to the sun. Having a sunbath or Vitamin D3 meds should help you for the bone strengthening as well.

So coming the comment, that Vitamin D deficiency causes severe cough, I would no it is nowhere connected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
