my 10 yr old son's right eye is red - the veins are red and he had a really bad headache ... i gave him brufen and he had a nap and has just woken up. eye still red . no headache. no fever.

Redness of eye can be because of eye infection like conjunctivitis, hypermia of conjunctiva....
The treatment depends on the cause and as of now you can yuse antibiotic eye drop and decongestant eye drops.
Later consult your eye doctor for examination and treatment accordingly.
