What Causes Recurring Heartburn And Shortness Of Breath?

I have some stomach discomfort. I have had in the past some days where I have heart burn, some acid reflux. I just saw a commercial this weekend where a woman said she had pancreatic cancer and her symptoms were mine plus shortness of breath. I do experience shortness of breath, meaning i will be just sitting or standing and all of a sudden I take a deep breat involuntarily. How concerned should I be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear patient!
I appreciate sharing your concerns on HCM!

Gastroesophageal reflux itself is responsable for the heartburn and sometimes shortness of breath since it may affect autonomic nervous system. The symptoms of cancer are more severe, including pain, discomfort, food intolerance, huge weight loss for short period of time, anemia etc.
Cancer symptoms are not gone with anti-acid drugs which are taken for the heartburn and reflux, such as ranitidin or omeprazole.

If you have any of the symptoms above consider an abdominal CT scan.

Take care!
Dr Eriol.
