Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Recurring Foot Cramps And Profuse Sweating While On Simvastatin?
I ve been taking simvastatin 20 mg for some time now. I had occasional cramps especially in my right foot. Now I am getting frequent foot cramps, accompanied by a good deal of sweating, which wakes me up in the middle of the night. By the time these symptoms are alleviated I m unable to return to sleep and suffer the consequences the rest of the day of lack of sleep. Should I immediately stop taking the statin until I can see my internist? Would that be safe? My cholesterol level without the statin had been about 200.
Even if you cannot get an appointment to see your doctor then you should try to call the office, if possible, to let him or her know about the symptoms that you are experiencing. Discontinuation of the medication may help the pain since pain is a known side effect of statins. Some persons can tolerate statins differently meaning that though you have problem with this statin, an alternative may work better for you.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
