What Causes Recurring Diarrhea And Abdominal Pain?

Had diaherra for a month, went to the doctor to be checked. They found no viruses and check for c diff. Saw a gi dr, put me on flagyl, Imodium, Zantec, and Zyrtec. I started having horrible abdominal pains from the Imodium. Stopped that and still had abdominal pain but not as bad. After I ran out if flagyl, the diaherra came back and left for a week and I stopped taking zabtec and Zyrtec as well. My diaherria has started back. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Recurrent diarrhea could be infective (bacteria, parasite) or dysentery or lactose intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome or drug induced etc.

As you have taken antibiotics already then the chances of antibiotics induced diarrhoea must be ruled out also.

You may go for routine blood count, electrolytes and stool examination with ultrasound abdomen and gastrointestinal tract endoscopy if required.

Treatment is mainly depend on the underlying cause but here you may require prebiotics and probiotics, antispasmodics, antacids and antiinflammatories etc.

Better to stop taking antibiotics further and take just symptommatic treatment with plenty of water and fruit juices for electrolyte balance.

You consult your gastroenterologist again for complete clinical assessment.
