What Causes Poor Memory, Mood Swings And Numbness In The Shoulders?

I m not one to run and see a doctor every time I feel some sort of unwellness coming on, but I ve been forgetting a lot, including things that have happened just hours before. Mood swings are worsening. I ve had sudden numbness starting from my shoulder down to my knee, and it will last for just a few minutes. I am only 47 years old and dementia runs on my Grandfather s side of the family. I tell myself its only temporary because it usually goes away. Is this something I should really worry about?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms looks like an early stage of dementia. Memory disturbances and mood swings are core symptoms of dementia. You also mentioned that you have a family history of dementia in your grandfather. I would suggest you to consult a psychiatrist and go through detail psychological evaluation including a memory test. You may require tab Donepezil for memory disturbances.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prashant Gohil
