What Causes Poor Appetite And Inability To Gain Weight?

Question regarding a healthy weight for an 18-year-old male, 5 8 and 1/2, and only 116 pounds. He actually grew half an inch in the last year and remained the same weight. He eats small portions, whenever he eats a full meal he complains about how full he is. Even when he has a small portion of something high calorie he complains about how much he ate. His parents are very controlling. He doesn t eat at all when he is particularly upset. I m concerned he may be anorexic. I am not sure though, he does eat candy and even has pizza and chips when they re available. He doesn t do any noticeable calorie counting, but regardless of what he eats it almost always remains in the 1200-1300 calorie area. He does have a small frame, though, which should be taken into account. It s just, I can feel his ribs through his puffy coat... when he s shirtless I can see his ribs, collar-bones and hips more defined than I think they maybe ought to be. I dunno, he has next to no fat on him and even his muscle seems... less in the past year or so. He used to be a runner, if that s of any import? He hasn t run in a few months though. Anyway, just looking for a professional opinion... I m concerned about mah boy. :(

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

At 5 feet 8 1/2 and 116 pounds, his BMI is 17.6. BMI is used to determine if weight is good, too much or too little for a particular height.

When the BMI is less than 18 , the person is considered underweight, this means that his weight is too low for his height since his BMI is 17.6.

You may need to take him to his doctor for an assessment to see if there is any particular medical or psychological reasons for his low weight.

He would be assessed for anorexia as well as possible medical conditions.

I hope this helps
