What Causes Pins And Needles Sensation During Pregnancy?

I am 12 weeks pregnant. I am a very active 29 yr old with two girls ages 5 and 3. I take multivitamins, choline and inositol, fish oil, folic acid. I have shown to be slightly anemic with past pregnancies. I need to remember to take my iron supplement or eat more red meat. I haven t been faint or dizzy. Just the typical slight nausia and fatigue. When I exercize I feel great. Two days ago I started getting a cold, pins and needles sensation in my foot. The next day it went to both feet and up to my calves. It seems to not be noticeable if I am in the middle of exercize or my feet are up and very warm. But I cant exercize all day, and I can t put my feet up all day. Could this be a iron deficiency problem or do I need more B-12 perhaps? Thanks for your advice.

Hallow Dear,

I fully agree with your opinion. The symptoms you have mentioned - pricking sensation with cold feeling is observed in anaemia and B12 deficiency also. You are known anaemic person. In pregnancy, the blood gets diluted. The volume of blood increases in which the fluid part is more than the cellular part. Hence it is likely that your anaemia could have gone worse.

Please get your haemoglobin and peripheral blood smear examined. It will highlight the picture. Also adhere to your iron, Folic acid and B12 treatment.

Please report to your Obstetrician to look for any other possible cause like peripheral vasoconstriction. Please get yourself evaluated for diabetes. Diabetes neuropathy also gives such symptoms.

I hope you will take the proper action.
