What Causes Persistent Painful Heaviness In The Leg While Having Spinal Stenosis?

My mother is 80 and she is having a lot of trouble walking especially climbing stairs. She doesn t feel any pain but it feels like her legs are heavy like lead and she is constantly struggling. She was on pain killers for a while because she has stenosis of the spine and some arthritis. Now she doesn t take anything at all for pain because surprisingly it just doesn t hurt anymore but lifting her legs is extremely difficult. She didn t have any surgery. Is it still related to her back? What can she do about it?

Hello,
She may have had some damage to the spinal nerves in her back that go into her legs. This could be from the stenosis. It could cause weakness. She needs to see a neurologist for an evaluation and may need nerve and muscle conduction studies to pinpoint the problem. It is hard to say what to do about it until the exact cause is determined.
