What Causes Persistent Low Iron Levels While On Treatment For Hemochromatosis?

I have been treated for hemochromatosis for 10 years with phlebotomies approxiamately every 4 months. I haven t received a phlebotomy in 18 months and my last blood test showed that my iron level was at 41. Is there an explanation why my iron levels aren t elevated?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The fact that iron levels are not elevated may be related to initial disease. Possibly it is going through a remission causing a drop in the iron levels.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka, General & Family Physician
