What Causes Persistent Bleeding After An Abortion?

I did an abortion on April 16, take cytotec orally and intravaginally. and I bled. Today its May 6 and I m still bleeding but not heavily, but I can see that there are still small blood in my urine. And when my husband and I have sex there is still blood. I didn t have an ultrasound but I did pregnancy test and it showed negative. Im just worried if there s still something left or the abortion is not complete. Is it ok not to have raspa and just wait for the bleeding to sttop completely? raspa here is so expensive and we can hardly afford it. Im scared that something might happen to me or Ill get poison just like the elders say when there s still something left inside the womb. Please enlighten me. your answers will really be helpful. thanks

Hi dear, I do appreciate your concern and fully empathize with it.

Persistent bleeding even 20 days after any type of abortion, particularly after cytotec tablets does need attention.

The first diagnosis for such bleeding is due to incomplete abortion. Though it is very rare after cytotec, it is known to occur. In incomplete abortion, the pregnancy test will become negative since the chorionic tissues are no more alive. Ultrasonography can reveal whether any tissues are remaining inside the uterine cavity. If so, evacuation by suction or curetting is indicated and it will take care of the problem. Since you are bleeding for such a long period and also had intercourse during bleeding the chances of superadded infection are very high and any procedure to be performed may need an antibiotics umbrella.

The other possibility is of infection. You have stated that you had intercourse even during bleeding also. This carries a great risk of infection. For managing the infection, you will have to take a course of antibiotics.

Please report to your Obstetrician ASAP to sort out the matter and get treated without delay to avoid further serious complications.

I hope I have explained you the facts clearly and you will take the actions without wasting any time. Also, please modify your life style.
