What Causes Period Like Pains During A Pregnancy?

Hi there, i am 8 weeks and 4 days pregnant and am experiencing pain lower down almost like period pains. It is not excruatiating but more of an uncomfortable pain, and luckily have had no spotting. Is this normal? I have my scan booked in for 3 weeks time and an appointment with the midwife in 2 weeks. I had a scan at 5 and a half weeks and the pregnancy is in the correct place thankfully. Please advise me Many thanks.

Dear Madam,

Pain in the lower abdomen at 8 weeks of pregnancy is not a good sign. It is suggesting that you may be in the process of abortion.

If the pain starts prior to the bleeding during the abortion process, it is almost impossible to save the pregnancy.

The other possibility of pregnancy outside the uterine cavity (ectopic pregnancy) also should be looked for. In this condition, the bleeding may be very little or none in the initial stage, but there is excruciating pain. Later on this condition may lead to bleeding emergency.

Please report to your Obstetrician ASAP without waiting for the next 2-3 weeks.
