What Causes Palpitations While On Toprol?

Dr just prescribed Toprol 25mg today, can I take this medicine with my regular high blood pressure medicine (valsartan/hctz 160 mg/12.5 mg? I have A-FIB, I took Rythmol medicine for about 9 months. I felt last few days my heart will have palpitations occasionally. Today I went to see the doctor my EKG shows the heart rate is 99. Dr. said rythmol medicine I took is not working and I should start taking Toprol. My heart rate is usually pretty low (55 - 60)range, is Toprol going to lower my regular heart rate? What other question I need to ask my doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is possible, if your regular heart rate is normally low and your heart rate in the office was high that it was high because you were anxious or nervous. Some persons have a stress response in a doctor's office that can affect their heart rate or blood pressure.

Your doctor may want to consider having a 24 hour check on your pulse first to make sure that this is not the case before adding the medication. It will lower your normal pulse rate.

I hope this helps.
