What Causes Palate Swelling?

I woke up in the middle of the night feeling I couldn't breathe or swallow. My soft palate is so swollen that swallowing is difficult and painful, and mouth breathing causes snoring sounds. I tried gargling with warm salt water, but it hasn't helped. I am an otherwise healthy 60-year-old woman with no dental issues and few allergy problems. What would cause this and what do you suggest I do to decrease the swelling?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns.
Since the swelling in the soft palate is so big and inflamed that you had to wake in the middle of night with inability to swallow and difficulty in breathing, this has to be taken care asap.
This can occur due to angioneurotic edema, infective focus in soft palate that has extended form tonsillar region.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Take any anti-inflammatory with pain killer property like Ibuprofen is it suits you.
Rush to ER as this can be really dangerous.
You may need admission, intravenous fluids and antibiotics.
Get the blood tested for infection, diabetes.
Continue the anti-inflammatory medication.
Continue gargling although it does not help much other than symptomatic feeling better momentarily.
Continue the medications till full recovery.
I find this answer helpful
