What Causes Pain On Left Side Of Back Caused After Injury?

Hi, I was undercut during a basketball game and landed on the left side of my back (bounced off the floor). I have experienced sharp but brief pains while performing certain movements. The intensity of the pain has reduced since the incident 1 week ago. Though the pain has somewhat subsided, I feel pain and soreness. Should I get an xray/MRI?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from pain on the left side of your back after injury during basketball game. Your symptoms may be indicative of injury on the eft side of the body, injury to the internal organs, muscles, or nerves. Pain on the left side may also be due to muscle strain or stress / injury / tear of the tendon. Soreness may be due to partial stretching or tearing of the muscle or tendon.

You can apply cold and warm compress alternately. Applying pain relieving spray (Volini) or pain relieving ointment may relieve discomfort. Take Combiflam or naproxen, one SOS when required to get relief from soreness, pain and discomfort. However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by an orthopedist, get X-ray or MRI (if required) done to detect the pathology causing you discomfort. Stay at rest, do not do heavy work or strenuous exercise for a couple of days. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
