What Causes Pain In The Upper Abdomen Below The Ribs?

26 years old. Pain started a few days ago on my upper left abdomen, a little below my top ribs. The first night it felt like a bad bruise or cramp that didn't go away. I woke up the next day with a lot of pain. It hurt to inhale, caugh, or move. The next day it felt a little better. Today is the forth day and it feels slightly better, although it still hurts to inhale deeply or caugh or sneeze. When go to inhale deeply it cuts off mid breathe, which i am assuming just my bodies response to the pain. I am unable to lay on my left side and it also feels like there is a bump where the pain is. It hurts to touch like a bruise. Should i be concerened or will this eventually go away on it's own? Since it seems to be getting slightly better each day I was assuming so. I should also say that I do not remember hitting it or bumping anything.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi! Good afternoon. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Although it needs to have a clinical examination of your chest and abdomen to have a firm opinion, from the history, I as a doctor would advise you for a clinical examination, followed by a plain X ray of the chest, an ultrasound abdomen, and a routine blood test like a complete blood count. Till then you could go for an anti inflammatory along with a proton pump inhibitor drug for a symptomatic relief. Further management would depend on the examination findings and reports of the investigations.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef
